KCC Europe 2005
Introduction
The goal we had set for the event was to engage in co-creation with conference participants in order to understand how the value of an event like KCCE is created and perceived. Furthermore, we wanted to learn about the participants' situations and get a better understanding how our tools and techniques might work for them.
In preparing we asked ourselves the questions:
- How is value created at an event like KCCE?
- What understanding do conference visitors have of the contributions our experience, tools and techniques can make to translate perceived value into strategy and action?
This page will detail how we got about working with our questions at KCCE. We will look at the questions we asked stand visitors, we will look at the different approaches we discussed with them and we will analyze our findings in order to learn how they relate to our questions.
Finally we have some directions if you want to follow-up on our dialogue at the event.
Findings
The focus of most solution shoppers is firmly on solution providers and the focus of the audience is firmly on thought leaders. No actions or mechanisms try to facilitate conversations between these two event target groups, while sharing experiences may be very valuable. When someone from the audience is there to learn from a thought leader how to better implement a specific solution next time, he may have valuable experiences to share with an solution shopper.
Solution providers and the event organizer have a very tangible relationship, while the solution providers are the main financers of the event. It seems as if it is a party for the audience and the thought leaders where the solution providers have not enough to gain. More solution shoppers at online information than here....
The publisher seems to be there to sell books, but the real reason is to maintain the network in an efficient way. The ladies who are editors for the (future) thought leaders brand themselves as the focused publisher for KM subjects and reinforce their relationships with existing thought leaders present while exploring conversations with future author opportunities.
Nobody we talked to differentiates between the fringe event and the thought leaders' presentations. While the fringe was officially aimed at the KM community, they were seen by most visitors as a conference stream.
Most people we talked to are in one way or another familiar with Karl- Erik's or Verna's work. Most of them hadn't seen it in action before though. being able to work with them in their own context definitely raised the awareness of how the tools they had read or heard about could be applied in practice. Paola's work in Intellectual Capital Auditing raised interesting discussions. This is a relatively new subject to most people and sets of some thinking. We talked to someone from Austria who has some experience with how this is now implemented at the Universities there.
Questions?
What questions does this analysis evoke? Some we came up with are listed here. Please let us know yours.
What can the ARK group, as the event's facilitator, do in order to help increase and structure the exchange of information between participants in the audience and solution shoppers 'community'?
What can be done to increase the value of the event to solution providers?
What would it mean to solution shoppers if there were specific market issues or questions and a roadmap for presentations and solution providers to visit in order to get a complete picture?
What would it mean for conference participants to engage in dialogue about these questions before and after the event, as happens on Knowledge Board with regard to the fringe event?
